Sports and sporting activities are very essential for the proper development of the child. It is not just a question of running around screaming at the top of the voice having fun and expanding energy.

Rather, sporting activities offer the best opportunity for parents to teach discipline to their children. The moment the child begins playing the sport, he or she will have to work in a discipline manner. There are specific rules to be followed.  There are specific authorities to be obeyed. Violating the rules or ignoring the authorities is only going to lead to complications.

Working together as a team and sticking to once role can lead to numerous benefits. Irrespective of whether the child is performing in front of a large number of persons are not, public applause is always a great motivator. You will find that the child understands the benefits of focusing on the final goal and ignoring short term benefits a lot faster with the help of sports.

Many parents become very lenient when it comes to academics when the child is doing well in sports. Don’t you realize that this is sending a very negative message? This is sending the message that it is acceptable to be indiscipline in certain aspects or facets of life as long as one is disciplined in other aspects.

Try to adopt a zero sum approach as far as discipline is concerned. Either your child is disciplined or it is not. Of course, it goes without saying that you will have to adopt the same harsh tactics upon yourself as well.

Only then will you win the respect of the child and will be in a position to assist the child in learning discipline better. The ideal time is that where the child becomes more disciplined than you and understands that you tried to go beyond your abilities just to help the child master this important characteristic.
