Substance abuse is the worst nightmare of each and every parent. It is a clear indication that all parenting skills and efforts put in the child have gone waste. For the child to get addicted to alcohol, drugs or cigarette at the very young age can be a damning indictment of the parenting skills of both the parents.

However, it is this guilt that is most dangerous. As a parent, you cannot afford to have aggressive approach towards your kids. If they have faltered, it your job to make sure that they stand up again. There are numerous temptations and inducements around kids. You have probably underestimated the pull of these narcotics substances. You probably presumed that your child will counter the same just because yours is a good family.

Sadly, things are never as simple as that. What steps should you take to tackle substance control in kids? You will have to start by analyzing your own performance and trying to find out where you went wrong.

How did your child get access to money? Did he or she fall in the companionship of wrong friends? Were you warned by friends and relatives? It is impossible for any child to develop the habit of substance abuse without the parents getting hints and suggestions. From change in behavior of the child to loss of small change from your wallet – there are many factors involved.

The critical analysis is the first step. The next step is the most important step. Do not hate your child guilty of substance abuse for making you look like a bad parent. That would present a very selfish picture to your child. Rather, you should clearly indicate that you are more concerned about the child than your own ego. This will help the child improve self esteem and gain the confidence to tackle the problem.
